Chapter 1
What is this…? This Hatred… Where does it come from?
Oh, I remember…
Joan… Long Ago… Or maybe as close as this sorrow…
I have made a decision.
I called her.
‘Joan?’ asked as I heard her voice on the phone.
‘… Huh? Max? Is that you?’ she asked, her voice cautious.
‘Err, yes, it’s me’. I answered, of course I was voice acting. ‘ Um, can I…?’.
‘Maxwell,’ she interrupted me, her voice breaking. ‘You need to know I’m sorry, I never meant to hurt you, I still love you, and I will… ’.
‘Forget all that, Joan. Past is past. I have forgotten. I need you.’ I laughed to myself, the sound of my voice breaking was as funny as this plan, I deserve an Oscar.
‘I need you too! I love you, love you to death!’ she said, she was crying. Crying out loud. I could feel hope in every word.
Love me to death, great. You will, hoan, I mean, Joan.
I waited a few seconds, acting a long sigh of gratitude.
‘Can I take …’. Took a deep breath, it had to be real. ‘Can I take you out? To the pictures, Joan?’
‘Of course! Yes! Yes, you can! Oh, Maxwell, I love you so much!’. She said, still crying.
‘Oh, Max, my Max…’. She cried some more.
‘It’s ok, my love’. I used to call her like that. I knew she would love the detail.....
‘My love! Yes, I am your love, Max! And you’re mine, Max! My love! My one and only!’ .
‘I’ll be there in a second, my love, ok? Is it ok? Are you free?’ I asked, cautious.
‘It’s ok, Max, I was just studying. I have Pataphysical tomorrow.’.
‘Are you sure you want to go out? Have you studied enough?’ I had to be the sweetest, the Max she loved.
‘Of course I want to go out, it is you, silly!’ her voice broke once again. ‘Oh, Ma… Maxwell Edison, I love you!’.
‘Oh, don’t cry, my love, I’ll be right there in around ten, we might get the ten-thirty screening’.
‘Ok, ok’. She said, recovering. ‘I’ll be ready. I will make up for everything, Max! I swear!’.
‘Joan… Don’t be silly, my angel’. I said. Then, my voice was a whisper. ‘You are my one, you don’t have to worry. See you soon.’ And I hung up the phone.
Everything... according to the plan...
I parked in front of her apartment, so pretty in blue, just as the sky a few hours ago.
The light outside was on.....
I walked cheerfully, whistling. I haven’t felt like this before, at last some justice.
I stopped in from of the door, and knocked once.
‘Just a minute, Max! Sorry!’ she said.
Stupid, unpunctual bitch...
She might have expected flowers, I had a hammer...
I heard a click...
The door opened...
There she was, blond, hazel eyes, the widest and sincerest smile on her face...
She said nothing. Just walked into me...
Bang, bang...
Maxwell's Silver Hammer
